Rethink

About Rethink

The biggest R is to rethink.  (Chances are, if you're on this site, you do this already!)

For example, do I really need this item, or have I been watching too many advertisements?  Why do I need it?  Is it disposable or durable?  How long will it last?  What will I do with it when I dont need it any more, or if it breaks?  Do I already have something else I can use instead?  Do I really need to drive there, or can I get there another way?

Rethinking means considering the impacts of our choices and lifetsyles.  It means considering the waste created in the production of the things we buy, and the resources that get used to support our choices.  It means asking questions about our habits.  It also means asking questions about the bigger picture.

Here are some sample questions for you to apply when you're "rethinking"!

  • Why do I need this item?  Is there something I can use instead?  Can I borrow one?
  • Is the item made from renewable resources?
  • What waste was produced when the item was made?
  • What waste will the item produce when I use it?  How much energy will it consume?  How will I dispose of it and the item?
  • Do I know if the workers who produced the item are paid a fair wage, and worked in fair conditions?
  • Who profits from the sale of the item?  Who suffers?
  • What are the hidden, environmental costs of the item (any pollution or harm to communities?)
  • Where were the raw materials grown/processed?
  • How far were they transported?
  • How much and what type of packaging does it have?
  • Could everybody have one of these, if they wanted one?

Further Suggestions

Here's an idea to try!

Record what you buy - for one day, or even one week, record everything you buy, the price, where you bought it, the type of packaging, and most importantly, why you bought it.  You'll be surprised!  This record can give you an accurate picture of what you consume and how you spend your time and money.  You may see some obvious changes you want to make.
