Are City tax dollars subsidizing Monsanto and other big international polluters? Next time you are waiting for a late bus in the snow, and thinking about giving up on the environment and driving to work, you should remember that the multinational giants located here are getting a big break in this year’s City budget.  Businesses have seen an absolute decrease in the amount they contribute to the upkeep of City services since Sam Katz was elected in 2004 from 61.2 to 57.6 million dollars.  Accounting for inflation, and increased GDP that’s a drop of over 32%!  One result of these business tax cuts, is that Winnipeg cannot afford to increase services desperately needed if we are to improve our ranking as one of the least environmentally sustainable cities in Canada.

You can have your chance to have your voice heard about what changes you think should be in the City budget by participating in a forum sponsored by the Winnipeg Citizen’s Coalition.

Guest speakers will include Ian Hudson, Economist at the University of Manitoba and Lynne Fernandez from the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives.
