Be Idle Free

Idling Myths

1. It takes more gas to stop and restart your engine than to keep it running.

  • The truth is that anything over 10 seconds of idling uses more fuel that shutting off and restarting you vehicle.

2. Shutting off and starting your vehicle is hard on the engine and the starter.

  • The truth is that the money you save by not idling will offset any costs accumulated through wear-and-tear on your vehicle.

3. You need to idle your engine to warm your vehicle before driving.

  • The truth is that your vehicle only has to run for 30 seconds before you can drive it...even in the winter. The best way to warm your vehicle (the engine and all its moving components), is to drive it. To speed up the process, use a block heater for 2 hours before you plan to drive next.
