Be Idle Free

Why turn off?

1. It wastes money and fuel.

  • When your vehicle is idling you aren't getting anywhere, but your engine is still burning 2.4 to 4 litres of gas an hour. In Canada, the average driver spends 8 minutes a day idling, which added up equals 75 million minutes of idling. This burns a total of 2.2 million litres of gasoline, and costs Canadians approximately $2.2 million dollars in wasted fuel every day.

2. It can damage your engine.

  • Excessive idling is hard on engine because the engine is not operating at the performance level and temperature for which it was designed. This causes incomplete combustion and the  unburned fuel both condenses on the cylinder walls and contaminates the engine oil, reducing lubrication, and causing engine wear. It can also cause water to condense in the exhaust system, causing corrosion and reduced life of the components.

3. It is bad for your health.

  • Pollutants that come from the combustion of fossil fuels include sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), ground-level ozone, particulate matter (PM), carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), volatile organic compounds (VOC) including benzene, some heavy metals and a number of other pollutants.
  • Numerous studies have linked particulate matter (airborne particles in solid or liquid form) to aggravated cardiac and respiratory diseases such as asthma, bronchitis and emphysema and to various forms of heart disease.

4. It increases greenhouse gas emissions.

  • When you are idling, you are releasing carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere, which is a greenhouse gas and a major contributor to human-induced climate change.
