Too often environmentally destructive behaviour goes
unnoticed and unregulated. Our economic system rewards companies that
over pollute, and hinders individuals from acting positively. We seldom
celebrate the environmentally positive things people do every day in our
communities. Every year, during Waste Reduction Week, Resource Conservation
Manitoba turns this disparity on its head with our Enviro-Spy program.
The Enviro-spies program rewards individuals
caught doing “Random Acts of Greenness”. This year, our volunteer Enviro-Spies spread
out across the city to the University
of Winnipeg, the University of Manitoba
and several high schools, middle schools and even an elementary school. Rewards, including bike lights, shopping bags
and notepads made from recycled material were given for things like riding a
bicycle to school or using a reusable coffee cup.
