About Seeds

Seeds, and the ways in which they are grown, processed and transported also have an effect on the earth.  To learn about Seeds of Diversity Canada, an organization working to promote sustainable seed-saving of heritage seeds, check out http://www.seeds.ca/en.php.

Considerations

  • Try growing and saving your own seeds!  Seed saving is an important way to participate in biodiversity preservation and local food systems.  Check out http://www.seeds.ca/ for more information on seed-saving in Manitoba and Canada.
  • Host or attend a seed-swap! Trading seeds and sharing information about varieties helps to develop a stronger food system and a community committment to preserving biodiversity
  • Seeds can be genetically modified or come from genetically modified breeds.  Check to ensure the seeds you are purchasing and/or planting come from naural sources.  GM crops have serious implications for biodiversity and ecosystem health.  See our GMO section for more info.
  • Check to make sure the seeds you are purchasing are certified organic and untreated.  Treatment of seeds and chemical inputs are harmful in their production and in the growing of the seeds.  They also may prevent your produce from becoming certifiable, depending on certification regulations in your area.
  • If you are buying seeds, consider purchasing from a local, organic seed-saver.  Local seeds often have the advantage of being prepared for a similar climate to the one you will be growing them in.  You will also be supporting local businesses who make an effort to reduce their environmental impact.
  • Ask about seeds and their impacts before buying them.
