Environmental issues are being integrated more and more into curriculum materials in Manitoba. And heightened concerns about the environment are increasingly being reflected in school practices, including --
- choosing non-toxic cleaning supplies
- implementing recycling and composting programs
- encouraging non-motorized transportation to and from school
- energy-saving retrofits inside buildings
- non-chemical approaches to naturalizing school grounds
- ... and more.
Parents and teachers know that what we model at school and at home is an even more persuasive lesson than what we tell students in class. Schools around Manitoba (and elsewhere) are working to make their educational environments greener - Learning Green, Learning Well.
In this section, we offer suggestions and examples. You will find tips about how to "green" your local school. There are some helpful resources here -- but if you're looking for something different, please let us know! You can e-mail us directly through rcm[at]resourceconservation.mb.ca.
Kids Can!
Make a Difference
Our youngest generation has a lot of leftover problems from past years and a lot at stake when it comes to sustainable living in the coming years. Kids are naturally concerned about environmental issues and many are eager to get involved. They need help, support and reassurance that their participation can make a difference. It can. In this section, we offer some ideas and suggestions.
