Outdoor Education
From neighbourhood walks to day trips to overnight excursions, outdoor education as a part of the school experience has a strong impact on our children and young people. Outdoor education activities and programs foster appreciation of nature and committment to living lightly on the earth from an early age. Benefits of outdoor education activities at your school may include: - hands-on, tangible learning for a wide range of school subjects, including: biology, physics, math, geography, cultural studies, Canadian studies, health and nutrition, physical education, chemistry, environmental studies, world issues
- sense of community and well-being
- increases physical activity
- building an understanding and appreciation of natural ecosystems
- promotes teambuilding and cooperation
- encourages various types of learners: aural, visual, textile, etc.
- integrates physical activity, respect for the earth, respect for one another and life skills in tangible and practical circumstances
For a great example of an extended outdoor education program in Manitoba, check out the EcoOdyssey program in Brandon, MB.
