Many environmental, social justice and other community groups rely on individual donations and short-term grants to do their basic work. To a great extent, many activities of grassroots groups are undertaken by hard-working and dedicated volunteers.
But while non-profit organizations certainly benefit hugely from volunteer support, the fact is that they also need money to keep lights on, rent paid, information flowing, and services continuing. In many cases, groups simply don't have the capacity to conduct large fundraising campaigns. So individual donations are welcomed warmly. Figures show that about 80 per cent of the funds that keep Canadian non-profit organizations in business come not from government, foundations, or companies, but from individual donors like you.
