Engaging Manitobans, Building Solidarity
Fair trade is the willing exchange of commodities and services between and among countries, such that:
- workers, producers and artisans receive fair wages for their labour
- products are produced under safe working conditions under international labour standards
- production creates the least harm to the natural environment
- communities receive a share of profits for education, health and other community services.
Fair Trade Manitoba is a program of the Manitoba Council for international Cooperation. FTM works with retailers, consumers and organizations to educate and inform the community about the benefits of fair trade, and promotes the wider availability of fair trade products in Manitoba. They also produce a fair trade shopping guide. Products available in Manitoba include chocolate, coffee, clothing, handicrafts, shoes, rice, tea, and more.
Take the One Month Fair Trade Challenge starting February 14
Fair Trade Manitoba is inviting Manitobans to take part in their third annual One Month Challenge. Participants pledge to have only fair trade coffee, tea and chocolate for a 30-day period starting on Valentine's Day. There are great fair trade prizes to be won!
Visit Fair Trade Manitoba for details. You can sign up as an individual or as part of a group of friends, family or co-workers. Over a thousand people participated in the event last year, and more are expected in 2009.
