Greening Travel

Whether it's to seek solace in a holiday, explore a new culture, volunteer in a faraway place, or attend a professional event, we know our travel choices have an environmental impact.  Consumption of fossil fuels in transportation contributes to climate change. And there are many other ways in which vacation and business travel have consequences for the natural environment. What can you do to green your travel plans?

Some Ideas to Start

  • If you're looking for a getaway, try somewhere nearby!  Manitoba has many treasures that folks from other places come to partake in - and so can we!  Visit Travel Manitoba for suggestions, and check out Manitoba camping areas for some ideas of places to vacation locally.  (You might save money, too!)
  • If you are attending or organizing a business meeting, consider having a web-conference or a teleconference.  This can save time, money and hassle and certainly reduces the environmental costs of flying or driving (multiplied by all the participants).
  • Among the different modes of transportation, air travel is one of the most intense generators of greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change.  Instead of flying, is there some other way you can get there?  What about the bus or train, especially for trips of less than 800 kilometres?
  • Consider the impacts of your stay on the community you are traveling to.  Is the community reliant on tourism to stay afloat?  If so, what happens in the off-season?  Do travel and tourism put pressure on the local environment?  Consider your involvement as a casual visitor to a location.  See our Eco-Tourism section for more information.
  • If you're camping, practice Leave No Trace principles (see our Household Leisure section for more info).
